They are rather dark red coloured, like the bigger Egyptian gerbil (G. pyramidum), the eyes are big and round, the ears are slightly pigmented. The nails are clear, the foot soles are hairy. The tail is longer than the body and sparsely covered with hairs.

Like other gerbillus species, they are found in dry country, sandy or rocky, sometimes with only scarce and coarse vegetation. They build burrows and the entrances are usually kept closed with sand. The diet consists of seeds, roots, nuts, grasses and insects. They are nocturnal.

In the wild, breeding has been reported at all seasons of the year. The gestation period is 20-22 days, average litter size is 4-5. The pups are born naked and helpless, they open their eyes at about 16-20 days and are weaned at about 1 month of age.

These animals have been kept in at least Germany, but not much is known about their behaviour and requirements.
