Small Egyptian gerbil

Scientific Name:

GERBILLUS GERBILLUS

External features:

The back is yellow to orange coloured, the belly is white, the ears are not pigmented, nor are the nails. The eyes are big and round. The body is about 9 cm long, the tail is a little more than 12 cm. They weigh about 23 grams.

Distribution:

Morocco and northern Nigeria to Jordan and Kenya.

Habitat:

They live in sandy areas as sand-dunes, but also in more cultivated areas. They build burrows and the entrances are usually kept closed with sand. Their food consists of seeds, grains, fruits and roots. They are social and nocturnal animals.

Reproduction:

In the wild, breeding has been reported at all seasons of the year. The gestation period is 20-22 days, average litter size is 4-5. The pups are born naked and helpless, they open their eyes at about 16-20 days and are weaned at about 1 month of age.

Maintenance and behaviour in captivity:

They can be very shy and restless, but are very nice to watch. It is hard to breed them, though. They need sand to keep their fur nice. Like other gerbillus species they cannot stand too much cold. Feed them with a fine seed mix. They can live for about 5 years.
