Lesser Short-Tailed Gerbil

Scientific Name:

GERBILLUS SIMONI

External features:

The back colour is rather orange agouti and goes far down to the white belly. The eyes are big and round. The eras are pigmented.
The soles of the hind feet are naked. The tail is shorter than the body and bares no tuft.

Distribution:

Eastern Morocco to Egypt.

Habitat:

Like other gerbillus species, they are found in dry country, sandy or rocky, sometimes with only scarce and coarse vegetation. They build burrows and the entrances are usually kept closed with sand. The diet consists of seeds, roots, nuts, grasses and insects. They are nocturnal.

Reproduction:

In the wild, breeding has been reported at all seasons of the year. The gestation period is 20-22 days, average litter size is 4-5. The pups are born naked and helpless, they open their eyes at about 16-20 days and are weaned at about 1 month of age.

Maintenance and behaviour in captivity:

As this species is hardly ever kept in captivity, not much is known about its behaviour and maintenance.
